The euromillions lottery first started in February 2004. It was and is a combination of national lotteries run in the European Union countries.

The first countries to combine their skills were the UK, France and Spain. The jackpots seen already have been astronimically high. Personally I think the jackpots are too high and technically could be rather dangerous if someone who had links with terrorism or extremist sympathies should win, but I guess that's an argument for the politicians.

The lottery itself consists of guess 7 numbers in total. 5 main balls and 2 lucky star numbers.

You pick 5 numbers between 1 and 50 and a further 2 "Lucky Star" numbers between 1 and 9. In the UK, you can play up to 4 draws in advance.

It appears there is no legal lower age limit for players in France. Mind you, the research in the UK suggests that the National Lottery (UK Lotto) has not raised any significant "gambling problems" - due to the fact that the gambling is so infrequent and at set times. There are reports of a very small minority of people spending far more money than they can afford on lotteries such as Euromillions and UK lotto, El Gordo etc., but I guess those people would only have spent their money on something else anyway.

Some other interesting research I read recently suggested that 18% of the UK adult population cannot save anyway. They are comulsive spenders. surely for people who cannot hold onto their money it is better they spend some of it on lotteries where they may at least stand a small chance they could make more than they spend?

Well, time will tell I guess. My advice is to be careful with gambling - and never spend more than you can afford to lose. Besides you can't take it with you, but never leave yourself or other people close to you disadvantaged due to your spending habits on a lottery.
